Retail Garden Centre Worker

Job Description & Main Duties

  • Maintain live plant material by watering, fertilizing and trimming as needed/required
  • Loading and unloading shipments, deliveries and customers vehicles
  • Stocking shelves & benches in all areas of the garden centre
  • Maintain a clean and organized retail centre
  • Assisting customers in locating products, making informed recommendations, advising them on appropriate plant care and answering general gardening questions
  • Answering phones in a pleasant and informative manner to field customer requests that could include but not limited to product inquiries, plant care inquiries, order taking, or landscaping/maintenance requests/questions
  • Ensuring the customer shopping and checkout process is quick, easy, accurate, and an enjoyable experience
  • Learn plant varieties, sizes and care information for our green-good stock
  • Complete other tasks assigned to them by management

Skills and Requirements

  • Retail, customer service experience and/or cashier experience not necessary but is an asset
  • Plant knowledge beneficial but not necessary
  • Positive attitude, self-starter, ability to prioritize tasks, takes initiative and direction, a good team player
  • Strong communication skills
  • Basic arithmetic
  • Willingness to learn
  • Attention to details, strong problem solving and time-management skills
  • Adapt to a continuously changing work environment and a moderate stress level

Availability and Hours Requirements

  • Seasonal work (starting April through to September - possibly to December)
  • A mix of full and part time work
  • Hours of operations vary but are usually between 8am - 6pm daily, 7 days a week. Candidates will need to be available to work any days and times throughout the 7 days of the week
  • Weekends and evenings need to be available for working

Physical Requirements

  • Capable to perform fast-paced, physically demanding work including prolonged standing/walking (4-8+ shift)
  • Repetitive motions and lifting up to 50lbs

Working Environment Requirements

  • Can handle working in greenhouse conditions (bright sun, humidity, hot/cold temperatures (sometimes extreme), wind/rain/snow/etc) in multiple seasons for prolonged periods of time
  • Capable to perform fast-paced, physically demanding work including prolonged standing/walking (4-8+ shift)
